At first glance, pickleball looks simple.
A small court, a plastic ball, and a paddle that looks like it came from a ping-pong table.
But anyone who has played for a few weeks knows something strange happens.
People get hooked.
The real reason isn’t just the game itself — it’s everything around it.
The games are short, which makes it dangerously easy to keep going. And if the courts aren’t crowded, you can roll straight into another game before your legs have had time to file a complaint.
You improve quickly, too. A shot you couldn’t make last month suddenly starts working. The third shot drop finally lands. A dink rally lasts longer than five hits.
Then there’s the community.
Pickleball courts are one of the few places where complete strangers mix easily. Players rotate in, talk between games, and before long everybody knows everybody.
And finally, there’s the simple truth: winning a point in pickleball feels really good.
One great rally, one perfect shot, one impossible save… and suddenly you’re thinking:
“Okay… just one more game.”
And that’s how the addiction begins.
